Step into a completely different underwater world as your journey reaches the Tropical Oceans.

This colourful zone introduces you to the incredible diversity of tropical marine life, from vibrant reef fish to some of the Aquarium’s most impressive residents. It is also home to our largest tank and underwater tunnel, one of the highlights of a visit to the Malta National Aquarium.

At the centre of the Main Tank is a recreation of the HMS Maori, a World War II shipwreck associated with Malta’s maritime history. Around it, tropical species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean move between coral reef-inspired habitats and open water.

Walk through the tunnel and watch marine life pass above and around you, including Blacktip reef sharks, Zebra sharks and Grey bamboo sharks. Large shoals of pompano and batfish share the water with colourful bannerfish, unicornfish and many other tropical species.

There is plenty to discover before you even reach the tunnel. Keep an eye out for the striking lionfish and see if you can spot the Vampire triggerfish, known for its distinctive red teeth.

With sharks gliding overhead, colourful fish surrounding the shipwreck and views stretching across the Aquarium’s biggest habitat, Tropical Oceans is one of the most immersive moments of the entire visit.
