Accessibility

We want every visitor to feel welcome and supported at the Malta National Aquarium. Our team can help visitors with physical, sensory, learning and non-visible disabilities plan a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

An accessible experience for every visitor

Plan your visit

Knowing what to expect can make visiting a new place feel more manageable. Our visual Social Story explains the journey through the Aquarium, from arriving and collecting tickets to exploring the different zones, taking a quiet break and leaving.

Light levels are low in parts of the Aquarium, while sounds and visual effects vary between zones. The Aquarium is located one level below reception and can be reached by stairs or lift.

Queieter Visits

Quieter visits are usually available upon request on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 09:00, before the Aquarium opens to the general public.

These visits are intended for visitors who may find crowds, loud sounds or music overwhelming. Sound levels within the Aquarium can be reduced to create a calmer environment.

To help us have the right team ready to welcome you, please submit your request at least 24 hours before your preferred visit. Complete the accessibility request form below, and our team will confirm the arrangements with you.

Sensory aids and lanyards

Ear defenders and lanyards are available to borrow on request, subject to availability. A refundable cash deposit of €5 is required when borrowing these items. You can request them in advance using the form below or ask at reception when you arrive.

Please return borrowed items to a member of staff before leaving the Aquarium to receive your deposit back. If sound becomes uncomfortable during your visit, speak to our team and they will explain what adjustments are possible.

Quiet Room

A Quiet Room is available for visitors who need time away from the main Aquarium environment. If you would like to use it, ask any member of staff and they will guide you there.

You can take the time you need to settle before deciding whether to continue your visit.

School and group visits

Our school programme welcomes classes organised specifically for students with disabilities, as well as classes where one or more students with disabilities are participating as part of the wider group visit.

We can discuss physical access, sensory needs, communication preferences and other adjustments that may help students take part comfortably. Teachers, learning support educators and group leaders are encouraged to contact us in advance so our team can prepare for the visit and explain the support available.

Transport, parking and arrival

The car park is located beside the Aquarium. Three clearly marked accessible parking spaces are available approximately 40 metres from the main entrance, with a low access ramp leading onto the pavement.

Take a parking ticket when entering through the barrier. Parking is free for Aquarium visitors: after your visit, ask reception to validate your ticket before returning to your vehicle.

Bus stops are located close to the Aquarium entrance. Visit the Malta Public Transport website for current routes and schedules.

Accessibility and staff support

Reception and the ticketing area have step-free access. The main Aquarium galleries are located one level below reception, while the Heritage Trail, which is also part of the Aquarium experience, is located one level above. Both levels can be reached by lift, with stairs also available.

Accessible toilets and places to sit and rest are available around the complex. Our team receives disability-awareness training and is available to assist throughout your visit. You are welcome to ask for help at any time.

For detailed access information, please read our Access Statement. You can also contact the Aquarium on (+356) 2258 8100.
