14. Ball Python
Don’t let their tough appearance fool you. Ball pythons are Africa’s smallest python species, known for their gentle nature and beautiful patterns. They live in warm grasslands and forests, often taking shelter in underground burrows to stay cool and safe.
They get their name from their unique defence behaviour: when frightened, they curl into a tight ball with their head tucked in the centre for protection. Ball pythons are ambush predators, patiently hiding until prey passes by. They strike quickly, wrapping around their meal, squeezing it tightly (constriction) before swallowing it whole. These snakes have strong muscles but prefer stealth over speed, and can go weeks without eating, especially during cooler months or before shedding.
It is also common for female ball pythons to grow larger than males because their bigger size allows them to carry more eggs and provide the space and energy needed to keep them healthy until they hatch. This size difference helps ensure the survival of their offspring.
