Nursehound
The nursehound is a small and camouflaged catshark found across the Mediterranean, including Maltese waters, where it skulks along rocky and algae-rich seabeds.
Most active at night, it pops out to hunt, using its rough skin to blend in perfectly among stones. It feeds on all sorts of bottom-dwelling prey, making it a handy cleanup expert of the ocean floor.
In spring to early summer, the females lay the eggs which stay hidden for many months before little sharks hatch and begin exploring the world.
Sadly, overfishing has made the nursehound less common, especially in the Mediterranean. It is listed as Vulnerable globally, so it’s important that we give it a hand. By caring for the sea and treating it with respect, we can help ensure these sharks continue to exist for years to come.
