9. Poison Dart Frogs
This vibrant tank is home to two eye-catching poison dart frog species: the Bumblebee Dart Frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) and the Green and Black Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus). Found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, these frogs live in warm, humid environments among low vegetation and near the forest floor.
These tiny amphibians make soft, bird-like calls to mark their territory and attract mates. They are also known for their bright colours that act as a bold warning to predators that they are poisonous. Despite their size, they play an important role in rainforest ecosystems by helping control insect numbers and serving as food for specialised predators that can handle their toxins.
Males often guard the eggs laid by females, which are usually hidden in moist leaf litter or small crevices. Once the eggs hatch, the male carries the tadpoles on his back to small pools of water, like those in bromeliads, where they continue to grow.
