Common Stingray
Meet Casper, our very special albino stingray! He’s a male, and he’s named after Casper the Friendly Ghost! He was caught a few years ago by a local fisherman, who got scared and cut off his tail. Stingrays have one or more barbs on their tails for defense, which is why people unfamiliar with them might react out of fear. Since then, Casper has been here with us at the Aquarium and he became our mascot. Albino stingrays are incredibly rare. Lacking skin pigmentation, their white coloring makes them easy targets in the wild, so few survive to adulthood. Casper is a lucky exception! Stingrays are close relatives of sharks, they both have skeletons made of cartilage instead of bone. The species Casper belongs to is commonly found in sandy coastal waters of Malta.
