Red-Bellied Piranha

Red-bellied piranhas are small but dazzling fish, their golden scales sparkling as they glide through the water and their bright red bellies flashing like underwater warning signs. When danger appears, they zoom together in tight schools, using the shimmering scales to confuse predators and make themselves look much bigger than they really are.

These clever fish can even “talk” to each other! By drumming, barking, and croaking with muscles near their swim bladders, they warn rivals, signal danger, or coordinate with the rest of the school. When wet season arrives the river will flood the tree roots allowing the females to lay eggs around the roots, where the adults will keep a watchful eye until the young hatch. Their golden shimmer, social smarts, and clever hiding tactics make them true masters of the Amazon basins.
